天灾骤降，寰宇同悲。
    突如其来的汶川地震，给人民生命财产带来惨重损失。死伤同胞数字的每一次翻新，都凝重得令人窒息；在每一个抽象数字的下面，都是一条条曾经鲜活的生命……

       A great tragedy has taken place in China. It grieves the world deeply.
       The earthquake disaster of Wenchuan has resulted in a very great loss of life and property. The number of our countrymen who are dead and injured is sadly very high.

    这是中华民族历史上的又一次大劫难。然而，我们的民族没有为灾难所吓倒，而是又一次在劫难中迸发出了惊人的力量。

       The Wenchuan earthquake is another of many tragedies endured by our Chinese nation. However, we are not daunted by it; on the contrary, we will overcome it and emerge stronger than before.

    地震发生后，党中央、国务院迅速成立抗震救灾总指挥部，有关部门迅速启动应急预案，开展抗震救灾工作。从政府的迅 速反应、从容指挥到社会的广泛动员、个人的积极参与，整个神州因汶川而悲，整个民族随灾区而动。在灾难面前，中华民族 所体现出的强大民族凝聚力，使人感到了温暖而震撼的力量。

       The Party Central Committee and State Council have reacted swiftly and decisively.The rapid response and leadership of the Government, along with the broad mobilization of Chinese society, clearly demonstrate that we the Chinese nation are fully behind thesupport rendered to the people affected by the disaster. All of us feel a strong sense of comradeship for them, and together, are emerging with a stronger sense of national cohesion.

    在这次抗震救灾中，无数感人肺腑的场景、无数人自发地捐款捐物、救援战士在面临塌方威胁时仍大喊：“求求你们让我再 救一个……所有这一切，都在书写着人类爱的宣言。

       The countless scenes of death and suffering, and the courageous rescue efforts touch us all. Many people all over China have donated generously. Despite landslides, rescuers take risks to bring the injured to safety. As Chinese, we are all greatly touched by such acts of love.

    自强者胜，天灾地妖不能加也。我们民族之所以历经磨难而不衰，就在于我们有百折不挠的民族精神。中华民族的历史，就 是一部在灾难面前不屈不挠，不断进步的历史。1998年的洪灾没能冲垮我们，2003年的“非典”没能吓退我们，今年年初的雪灾 没能压倒我们，这次地震灾害同样不能让我们屈服。

       People of self-reliance shall overcome. Our national spirit of perseverance will prevail through all difficulties. The history of the Chinese nation is the history of perseverance and progress. The floods of 1998, the 2003 SARS outbreak, and the snow disaster at the beginning of the year – all these did not overwhelm us. We shall overcome this earthquake catastrophe.

     中华民族可以经受起任何艰难困苦的考验。待到踏平灾难，我们会以坚定的声音向世界宣示：中华民族仍将继续前行！

       Just as we as a nation have done in the past, we will declare to the world that once we have overcome this disaster, we will move forward!
